What to Wear Guide

Okay, so we booked our shoot. Now what do we wear?

I am super passionate about fashion and could go on about it forever, but to keep things short – the better outfits you have on the better your photos will turn out. Take what I say with a grain of salt because at the end of the day all that matters is that YOU feel comfortable and confident. Also make sure to bring an extra outfit, or two just in case. I have changing tents that are available at the shoot.

What will always photograph well?

The more movement in your clothes the better! This means flowy articles such as longer dresses, skirts, kimonos etc. Layer these with a denim jacket or a moto (leather jacket) if it is chilly or cold. When choosing colours, think of the natural earth toned colours that will be where we are shooting. Consider the time of year and go from there.

Colours that photograph well are beige, rust, blue denim, grey, khaki, olive green, mauve, mocha, ivory (white can be harsh, but doable) navy and burnt orange.

What are solid Nos?

Any primary colours such as bright red, blue, green, yellow and purple. The goal is to compliment the environment around you, and bright colours are more of a distraction and don’t photograph well. Next; no articles with big logos, no baseball caps or beanies. If photographing in a forest, mountain or lake, typically heels are not ideal but can be worn if photographing on flatter and solid grounds. Consider sandals, mules or booties instead! Last, stay away from clothing that is restricting or too tight. You want to be able to move around and be comfortable.

How do we coordinate?

Whether you are doing a couples shoot or a family shoot, style your outfits to coordinate with each other and not match. Lets be real – if everyone was wearing the same outfit that would be boring! So, let’s add some personality! For example, if your partner is wearing khaki pants consider wearing a denim skirt or dress to match. You can never go wrong with wearing neutral colours but just make sure each person is wearing different colour top and bottoms so no one blends in together.

Textures and Accessories

Consider layering textures such as denim, lace, silk, corduroy, knit, fringe, etc. The more details there are to photograph the more visually interesting your photos will be! Layer up with jewelry and consider bringing a flat brim hat.

Being YOU!

If the examples I have given don’t resonate with you, that’s okay too!

I am here to photograph you for who you are and that includes your personality. So, don’t be afraid to let it shine through what you’re wearing. Do not be afraid to be bold. Bring more than what you’re wearing to the shoot. I am also more than happy to help pick out what to wear and help peice outfits together!
